About the project
FORWARDS will prototype The ForestWard Observatory to provide timely and detailed information on European forests’ vulnerability to climate change impacts.
The project will also deliver science-based knowledge to guide management using the principles of climate-smart forestry, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity preservation (CSF & Restoration). Stakeholder engagement and public participation in decision-making processes is also crucial. The project capitalizes on data from existing networks and expands this with a system of five demo-sites (hemiboreal forests, Latvia; Central Apennines, Italy; Vindelälven Biosphere Reserve, Sweden; Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, UK; Alpine region, Switzerland) plus ~50 trials established via grants to third parties.
