REWIRE project launches to advance smart and circular (re)manufacturing across Europe
Press Release -
The new Horizon Europe initiative brings together 13 partners from 8 countries to develop artificial intelligence, robotics and digital solutions for the future of sustainable manufacturing.
A new Horizon Europe-funded project, REWIRE (REmanufacturing with smart robotics for WIde-scale Redeployment) officially started in May 2026 with the ambition of accelerating the adoption of smart remanufacturing and circular manufacturing solutions across European industry.
Coordinated by Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR), REWIRE brings together 13 partners from eight European countries to develop and demonstrate innovative technologies that can make remanufacturing more efficient, scalable and economically viable. The project will integrate advanced robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins and traceability systems to support the recovery, restoration, and reuse of products and components.
Over the next four years, REWIRE will focus on industrial sectors where product complexity and operational variability continue to limit the wider adoption of remanufacturing practices. To address these challenges, the project will develop integrated traceability solutions, modular robotics, AI toolboxes, adaptive systems for automated disassembly and inspection, digital product passport applications and training resources to support workforce upskilling. By combining digital innovation with the principles of the circular economy, REWIRE aims to help European manufacturers reduce waste and make better use of valuable resources, thereby contributing to more resilient industrial value chains.
“Through the REWIRE project, we aim to accelerate, streamline and enhance the reliability of manufacturing processes by supporting the transition towards a circular industrial ecosystem. ICONS contributes to this vision by ensuring that project results reach the right audiences, engaging key stakeholders throughout the project and supporting academia through training activities and initiatives that raise awareness and encourage the adoption of innovative solutions”, said Ilaria Bonetti, Project Management Officer at ICONS.
As the partner responsible for promoting the project, engaging with stakeholders, and fostering social innovation, ICONS will work closely with the consortium to ensure that project results reach policymakers, industry stakeholders, researchers and the wider public, thus helping to maximise the project’s impact across Europe.
Funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, REWIRE will contribute to Europe’s ambition of building a more sustainable, competitive and circular manufacturing sector.
