9 EU-funded projects join forces for the International Day of Zero Waste 2025

Press Release -

A social media campaign showcases innovation and circular solutions to tackle global waste challenges.

Various EU-funded projects will roll out a social media campaign as part of this year’s International Day of Zero Waste. In their own ways, they are all driving the shift towards sustainable solutions by tackling waste challenges in industries ranging from construction and healthcare to energy, batteries, and plastics.

With global waste production reaching critical levels, adopting sustainable waste management and circular economy principles is more urgent than ever. The International Day of Zero Waste 2025 serves as a crucial reminder of the need to reduce waste, reuse materials, and innovate towards a more sustainable future.

The social media campaign, launched by ICONS and running across multiple platforms, will show how these pioneering projects are shaping a zero-waste future:

·      WOODCIRCLES is addressing waste reduction in the construction industry by promoting sustainable design, reuse, and recycling of wood materials, ensuring that valuable resources remain in circulation rather than becoming waste.

·      ANIPH is revolutionising the medical field with biodegradable bioplastics for wound dressing materials, offering an eco-friendly alternative that reduces plastic waste while maintaining high medical standards.

·      CCRI Knowledge Hub provides essential insights and knowledge-sharing to facilitate circular economy transitions across various industries.

·      WalNUT is tackling nutrient recovery from wastewater to create a sustainable system that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency.

·      Rebelion is working on circular bio-based resins to reduce reliance on fossil-based materials.

·      PLASTICE is addressing plastic waste by developing sustainable, circular solutions to decrease environmental impact.

·      CARMA-H2 is developing circular strategies for hydrogen production and usage, converting waste into renewable hydrogen and food-grade CO₂.

·      NEMO works to advance the state of the art of battery management systems (BMS), so that users can count on longer-lasting, safer, and more efficient batteries. This will ultimately contribute to limit further waste.

·      TIMBERHAUS creates climate-smart, circular and sustainable solutions for the use of wood in the construction sector

By demonstrating how research and innovation contribute to sustainable transformations, the campaign aims to engage stakeholders in discussions about a circular economy and encourage collective action towards waste reduction.

Starting on March 24th, the campaign will run until March 30th, with short videos and quotes of participating projects using the hashtags #ZeroWasteEU.

Any other initiative, project or company interested in joining the campaign is welcome.

Follow the participating projects on Bluesky and LinkedIn to stay informed and be part of the change.
