About the Project
URBAN GreenUP develops, applies and validates a methodology for Renaturing Urban Plans to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve air quality and water management and increase the sustainability of our cities through innovative nature-based solutions.
Three front-runner cities – Valladolid (ES), Liverpool (UK), Izmir (TR) – and five fellow cities – Mantua (IT), Ludwigsburg (DE), Medellin (CO), Chengdu (CN) and Quy Nhon (V) – are involved in the project.

This kit provides guidance on using Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to improve urban livability and resilience to climate change. It includes best practices and recommendations for every stage of NBS implementation — selection, setup, and monitoring — based on insights from the URBAN GreenUP project. - When nature came back to the cities
This pageflow shows how the cities of Valladolid, Liverpool, and İzmir are applying nature-based solutions — such as green roofs, parklets, and water retention ponds — while raising environmental awareness. Their work demonstrates a methodology for urban renaturing, providing tools for cities worldwide to adopt context-specific solutions. - Final video
Watch the URBAN GreenUP Video News Release to discover how the city of Izmir is welcoming nature back in its urban areas. - Booklet
A journey to explore the most innovative Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) developed by European cities through the URBAN GreenUP project, aimed at making urban areas more liveable and resilient to climate change. The project demonstrates large-scale, replicable solutions in its Frontrunner cities and supports cities worldwide in designing their own Re-Naturing Urban Plans using its adaptable methodology. - Infopack: Renaturing Urban Plans methodologies
This guide presents an integrated methodology for the development of Renaturing Urban Plans (RUP). The goal is to help cities worldwide to increase environmental sustainability and to address climate, social and economic challenges via the local implementation of Nature-based solutions (NBSs). - Presentation video: A new strategy for re-naturing cities through nature-based solutions
URBAN GreenUP designs and deploys nature-based solutions to renature urban environments. By integrating green infrastructure, this approach helps mitigate climate change, improve air quality, and enhance water management, ultimately making cities more sustainable and livable.
